The Famine Graveyard – Teamplaillin Bán

One of Listowel’s most special and important attractions is Teampaillin Bán, the burial place of over 2,500 victims of the Great Famine (1845-49).

Having a special place in the hearts of Listowel people, this respectfully restored graveyard and monument is somewhere for people to pay their respects and remember those who have lost their lives.

Tempall Bán: Aspects of the Famine in North Kerry by local historian John Pierse is a great way for visitors and guests to learn more about Teampaillin Bán and the history of the famine in North Kerry. Published by Listowel Tidy Towns in 2015, John’s book brings the devastation caused by the famine to life, and includes some very important and relevant facts, including how, in March 1951, over the course of a single week, 61 peopled died in Listowel workhouse.

With its unique whitewashed headstone and famine shrine, Teampaillin Bán is somewhere for people to remember those who have passed and reflect to themselves on what is important in life.
