The Sean McCarthy Weekend is held every year during the August Bank Holiday weekend
The Sean McCarthy Festival was initiated back in 1993 in honour of one of the greatest song-writers Kerry ever produced. Songs like ‘Shanagolden’, ‘Red Head Mary’, ‘In Shame love in Shame’ are just a few of the many songs that are part of the Ballad folklore of Ireland.
The programme of events is very much based on subjects that were dear to Sean – ballad composition and performing, storytelling, dancing, traditional music and the bog. Sean McCarthy, as he often said himself, was born on the verge of the bog. As a result you will find many references to the bog in his songs and stories.
The Sean McCarthy Weekend provides a fitting tribute to an individual who will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. The Sean McCarthy Ballad Competition provides an incentive for individuals to write original ballads and to perform them in the final (if selected) in Teach Siamsa Finuge.
