North Kerry Eagles have been an important part of the Special Olympics movement in Munster and Ireland since their very first training session in September 2005.
Special Olympics changes lives. It is first and foremost a sports club for people with an intellectual disability but it provides athletes with far more than the physical benefits of sport.
It’s about fun, friendship and team spirit; it’s about a feeling of belonging and ultimately improving quality of life. Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realise their dreams and know they can fit in.
Special Olympics Ireland currently offer 15 sports (13 Summer and 2 Winter) plus a Motor ActivitiesTraining Programme and they work closely with the National Governing Bodies for sport to ensure they provide quality sports coaching and competition for all the athletes.
North Kerry Eagles concentrate on Athletics and Gymnastics:
- For Athletics, the Juniors (8 – 13 year olds) are based in Listowel Community Centre and the Seniors (13 years +) are based in Tarbert Comprehensive School.
- Gymnastics is on Wednesday afternoons in Presentation Convent Primary School.
- There are also inter-club sports days involving 3 other clubs in Kerry.
North Kerry Eagles compete in a four-year cycle for Special Olympics. In competitions in 2013 we have won 11 medals in Athletics and 14 medals in Gymnastics and 3 of our Gymnasts were selected for the Irish Games in Limerick in 2014.
Our club is funded from donations (e.g. Ballybunion Lady Captain’s Golf Tournament, Church Gate Collections, Poker Runs etc) and each athlete pays an annual sub.
The club also has a very good social activities programme, especially in the Summer, plus Christmas parties and lots more throughout the year.
