Listowel Tidy Towns Group is a community based voluntary body which was founded in February 1993 in response to many comments about the untidiness of several parts of Listowel at that time. It was given the working title of T.A.B.L.E. (Towards a Better Listowel Everybody) but is now simply known as Listowel Tidy Towns Group.
The Group has 24 members at present and meets approximately once a fortnight in St Patrick's Hall.
New members are encouraged to join and take part. From May to September the Group meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7pm at St John's Theatre. Members, new and old, get involved in painting, litter patrols, weeding and all manner of things. All equipment is provided so anyone interested in helping out just need turn up!
Since first entering the Best Small Town category in the National Tidy Towns Competition in 1994, Listowel has won one Bronze and five Gold Medals. It has also won a Heritage Award with The Lartigue Monorail, a Gradham Award for Bilingual Signage, a Landscape Award with The Garden of Europe and two Shopfront Awards with J J Galvins and The Harp & Lion.
The town's overall mark has steadily increased annually until, in 2012, Listowel was only two marks behind Clonakilty for the Best Small Town Award!
There are also annual local awards for: Best Shopfront, Best Estate, Best Garden and Best Presentation of a Hanging Basket/Window Box. There are several Childrens Competitions too.
Listowel Tidy Towns Group's aim for 2013 is to win the Best Small Towns Award. With the help of the whole Community and the very good working relationship the Group enjoys with the local Town Council and other voluntary bodies we can do it!
