Way back in 1984 Listowel Town Council was approached by Cooperation Ireland with a view to developing a linkage with a town in Northern Ireland. It was agreed that Downpatrick should be a sister town to Listowel, due to the link that already enjoyed by both towns, primarily through Senator Maurice Hayes, a native of Dowptrick and whose mother came from North Kerry. However, both towns also had other things in common including a strong historical, literary and railway heritage.
The aim of the twinning programme is to develop and encourage cross-border and cross-community activities through social and communal interaction and to challenge perceptions of each community by breaking the traditional 'stereo-type' among communities both North and South.
For over 30 years thousands of people have travelled across the border from both towns, many for the first time, to participate in community activites organised by the twinning programme.
In recent years Listowel Downpatrick Linkage Group has developed new links with towns in the European Union, including the Mountain Community of Iezer Muscel, Romania and Michalowice Municipality, Poland.
Through the support of EU Citizens Programme a series of events and conferences have been held with representatives from Listowel travelling to sister towns throughout Europe.
